5 ways to maximise your space in a smaller home

By Leanne Glavin

If you only have the budget to buy a smaller home, you might be wondering about the best ways you can use the space you have efficiently and still make your house a warm, welcoming environment.

The good news is that there are a lot of ways to go about getting the most out of every room in your home, as long as you follow at least a few of the following steps:

1) Paint it white
That old saying about mirrors making small spaces look bigger? It applies to white paint for the same reason: They both reflect light. With that in mind, any room that’s feeling a bit cramped can be painted white to create the perception of more space.

2) Hang artwork higher
Of course, white walls can feel a bit bare for obvious reasons, and the best way around that is to put up artwork. But if it’s too low to the ground, it will be another thing that looms in the room’s living space. Instead, move it up closer to the ceiling to create a small optical illusion.

3) Use multi-purpose furniture
One of the easiest ways your living spaces can become crowded is if there’s too much furniture in them. For that reason, you might want to think about finding furniture that serves multiple purposes – like tables that come with built-in storage space or small tables that can be expanded to accommodate more guests.

4) Don’t stuff the space
Along similar lines, even if you want to have plenty of seating in the living room, you need to think about what’s feasible. A small room with a couch, love seat and easy chair can feel crowded at all times, but one with just two of them should be just as accommodating in most situations.

5) Clean up clutter regularly
One of the easiest ways for homes to feel cramped is when things aren’t put in their proper storage spaces or thrown away. That could include shipping received in the mail or laundry that hasn’t been put away, but if you make de-cluttering a priority, your home will feel a bit more spacious.
